Waiting by Ha Jin Is a nonfictional story based on that of asan named Lin Kong an army doctor in Chinese society. The plot revolves around three people The main character Lin , Shuyu who he is legally married to but unfortunately Lin doesn't have feelings for her and is in fact embarrassed to be married to this woman, and Manna Wu who Lin is seeing dating while away from home where he works. These facts previously stated above cause a controversy amongst the three. Lin wanting to be as good a person as possible tries and requests a divorce from his legal wife Shuyu yearly, who agrees at first but changes her mind in court.
This in turn leads Jin to return to work to explain the two sided bad news to Manna who wishes to marry Lin, but because of Shuyu decisions cannot legally. Something that surprised me was the fact that this dilemma was lived through for basically the next 20 years. As i was reading i began to wonder what was their problem (the married pair).
